My cousin's computer was very infected with Malware, Adware, and other nasty stuff. Brand new MacAfee found only two. I installed Norton 2009 which found over 20 nasty programs running and cleaned them.
Norton wasn't able to clean them all on the first scan, clean, and reboot. However a second scan, cleaning and reboot did the trick. What was not good was the fact that Norton didn't tell you it was still infected after the first reboot.
