Twitter
In simple words twitter can be described as a free social networking and micro-blogging service. This service enables its users to send and read other users’ updates and these updates are known as tweets. Tweets are in the form of text and one can post a tweet of up to 140 characters in length. These tweets are actually displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). The sender of the tweet can simply restrict the delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, or can allow anybody to access them. The only ways to send and receive tweets are via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The best thing about the service is that it completely free to use over the Internet, but in the case of using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.
Twitter has gained extensive popularity worldwide since its creation which took place in the year 2006. And often twitter is described as the “SMS of Internet,” like in that the site provides the functionality actually via its application programming interfaces for other desktop and web-based applications to send and receive short text messages, often obscuring the Twitter service itself.
There are currently four gateway numbers available for SMS i.e. short codes for the United States, Canada, India, and a United Kingdom-based number for international use. A short code is also available for Vodafone users from the UK. There are several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via e-mail.
According to estimation the number of daily users varies as the company does not release the number of active accounts. According to estimation of Jeremiah Owyang of Forrester Research which was done in November 2008, Twitter had 4-5 million users. Twitter stood third as the most used social network according to February 2009 Compete.com blog entry ranks while Facebook being the largest, followed by MySpace), which puts the number of unique monthly visitors at roughly 6 million and the number of monthly visits at 55 million. While in March 2009, according to Nielsen.com blog Twitter is ranked as the fastest growing site in the Member Communities category for February 2009. Here is the total growth of different socializing sites like Twitter had a growth of 1382%, Zimbio had a growth of 240%, followed by Facebook with a growth of 228%.
