Mac or commonly known as Macintosh is one of the leading brand name of the present time. It covers a number of personal computers that are designed, marketed and developed by Apple Inc. The first commercially successful personal computer that features a mouse and GUI (Graphical user interface) instead of command line interface was known as Macintosh 128k and it was released in the year 1984 on 24th January. During the second half of the 1980s Apply Inc build market share in order to see it dissipate in the 1990s as the personal computer market moved towards IBM PC, compatible machines that run Microsoft Windows and MS DOS. Then the Macintosh brand revitalized due to the fact that Apple consolidated multiple consumer level desktop models into the 1998 iMac all in one, which become very popular and sold very well. At the present time Mac systems are most commonly used at a number of places such as homes, offices, education centers and creative professional markets etc. Some popular Mac systems are the aforementioned iMac and the entry level Mac Mini desktop models, the workstation level Mac Pro tower, MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops and the xserver server.
In the late 1970s Macintosh project was started with Jef Raskin who was an Apple employee. Jef Raskin envisioned a low cost and easy to use computer for general consumer. Then in the year 1979 he was authorized to hire an engineer who could put together a prototype for this project. Over the years Jef Raskin worked hard and assembled huge development teams that designed and create the original Macintosh software and hardware. The development teams assembled by Jef Raskin included George crow, Joanna Hoffman, Jerry Manock, Chris Espinosa, Andy Herzfeld, Daniel Kottke and Andy Herzfeld.
For the production of hardware Apple directly sub contracts Asian manufactures in order to maintain a high degree of control over the hardware. At the present time Intel x86 processors are used in Mac product family. The entire Mac models available nowadays ship with at least 1 GB RAM as standard. Graphics cards normally used in Mac product family are nVidia GeForce, ATI Radeon or Intel GMA graphics card. Apple also started to include built in iSignt cameras to appropriate models and a media center interface called Front Row that is designed in such a way that it can be operated by remote control in order to access media stored on the computer.
