Other useful features offered by Skype are file transferring, instant messaging and video conferencing. Since the launch of Skype, it has experienced rapid growth and now it has become very common, and it is used in almost every part of the world at the present time. EBay acquired Skype in September 2005 for $2.6 billion. Entrepreneurs Janus Friis, Niklas Zennstrom and a group of software developers based in Tallinn, Estonia, developed Skype. Headquarter of Skype group is situated in Luxembourg, with offices situated in a number of cities such as Tartu, Stockholm, London, Tallinn, Pargue and San Jose.

Skype was initially released in August 2003. In January 2006 Skype introduced videoconferencing for the Windows and Mac OS X platform users. On 13th march 2008 Skype 2.0 was released for Linux, this version of Skype also features support for videoconferencing. Skype starting from version 3 designed for Windows supports high quality video with amazing features such as full screen and screen in screen modes that is similar to that of mid range videoconferencing systems.

On 29th October 2007 Skype launched its very own cell phone under the name 3 Skypephone which runs a BREW OS. On 24th April 2008 Skype announced that now they are offering their services to more than fifty other mobile phones. Skype also offers its services for PlayStation Portable (PSP) Slim and Lite with firmware version 3.9 or higher. But in order to use Skype on a PSP users must purchase one of three microphone input peripherals. 1st is the Skype headset kit that comes with a headset with a boom microphone and the PSP remote. The other two that phug in to the proprietary USB connector at the top, being the dedicated microphone peripheral or PSP camera that also has a built in microphone. The upcoming model of PSP, which is known as PSP 3000, has a built in microphone that allows communication without the need of skype peripheral.
